Released: 7/2/2008

The closure begins at the end of County Road 447.

Hells Half Complex

Northern Rockies Interagency Type 2 Incident Management Team Jess Secrest, Incident Commander. The Hells Half Complex is estimated at 2,793 acres and 35% contained. The expected containment date is July 10, 2008. There are 345 personnel assigned to the complex. Two active fires are still uncontained within the Complex. Both fires continue to grow towards the south and east. Dangerous terrain, heavy fuels, dense smoke, and limited access into many areas continue to hamper fire suppression.Firefighting crews are staged at the Salyer Guard Station for responding to new fire starts. The smoke inversion is causing poor visibility over the complex and limits the use of aircraft. No structures have been lost, and no evacuation orders have been issued. The Underwood Mountain Road, between the community of Hyampom and Hwy 299, is open to public traffic. Fire vehicles are using the Underwood Mountain Road to access the Half Fire; the public should use caution and expect to see moderate vehicle traffic on the road.

The Half Fire, located approximately three miles southwest of Burnt Ranch, CA, is 1,500 acres and 18% contained. Yesterday, fireline construction on the SE corner was completed. Hand crews and brush chipper equipment prepared roads in the NE portion for burn out. The fire is one mile west of the Underwood Mountain Road (Road 60), along the boundary of the Six Rivers and Shasta-Trinity National Forests.

The Grouse Fire, located six miles SW of Burnt Ranch, CA, is 1,293 acres and 50% contained. The fire is now within one mile of the Route 6 powerline corridor. Burnout continued along the completed fire line on the SE portion of the fire. Dozer and hand fireline is constructed on the NE corner and towards the South Fork of the Trinity River.

Today's Planned Activities

Half Fire: Burn out will continue where safe, and mop up will continue on the SE corner. Continue fireline construction on the east flank to the south. Complete the road prepping for burnout on the NE corner. Begin fireline construction in Surprise Creek Valley to stem fire spread to the north.

Grouse Fire: Continue mop-up on the west edge of the fire. Construct fireline and burnout on the SE fire edge. Continue to construct fireline on the NE corner and towards the South Fork of the Trinity River.
