South One Announcement

Lake Drummond Closure Order

Incident: South One Wildfire
Released: 6/19/2008

CHESAPEAKE, Va. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Lake Drummond Reservation, part of the Dismal Swamp Canal, will be closed to visitors, starting at 4 p.m., today, as a safety precaution due to the predicted high winds and smoke created by the wildfires that continue to impact the area.

In addition, after close coordination with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Lake Drummond will also be temporarily closed until the threat passes.

The reservation and lake will remain closed until the smoke has cleared and any potential danger from the wildfires has passed. Corps contractors are placing temporary closing signs at the entrance to the reservation and lake, and at the city of Chesapeake Boat Ramp. Visitors can check for re-opening signs at all three locations, or call the Corps at (757) 201-7642; U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at (757) 986-3705.
