WALLOW FIRE UPDATE
Location: 7 miles southwest of Hayfork, California
Date and Time of Fire Start: August 29, 2007 @ 2:00 p.m.
Cause: Under Investigation
Estimated Fire Size: 1,440 Acres
Estimated Fire Containment: 75%
Estimated Expected Containment: September 3, 2007
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Operational Objectives: Keep the fire within the current containment lines.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fire Activity: Fire behavior has diminished to smoldering, creeping, and isolated interior burning; however, low fuel moisture will maintain the threat of fire spread and spotting potential. Another evening of moderate overnight relative humidity recovery allowed the fire to remain active through the night. Interior hot spots in the fire should continue to burn out.
Past and Current Actions: Firefighters have completed line around the fire. The fire remains west of Forest Service Road 2N07 and south of Indian Valley. Fire crews will patrol and mop-up hot spots 500 feet in the perimeter and initiate suppression rehabilitation. Interior trees and snags have been weakened by the fire and are falling. Firefighters remain watchful for the snags and embers in the fire area.
Fire Restrictions and Closures: For public safety, the Shasta-Trinity NF has implemented a closure order for the area surrounding the fire. Camping in the vicinity of Indian Valley and roads leading into the fire area will be closed to hunting and public use. This closure order does not apply to area residents or Forest Service special use permittees and contractors. The public is encouraged to continue to use the many other dispersed recreation sites in the following South Fork Management Unit areas: South Fork Mountain, Yolla Bolla, west of Hyampom Road, north of Hayfork, Wildwood, and Trinity River. For additional information regarding the closure area boundary or other recreation opportunities, contact the Hayfork Ranger District office at (530) 628-5227. The Forest Service will reassess the fire closure area today.
NOTE: Highway 36 and Highway 3 remain OPEN.
Remarks: The fire has burned approximately 784 acres of Forest Service lands and 656 acres of private lands. NorCal Team II continues to manage the fire for the Shasta-Trinity NF. Demobilization of fire personnel has begun. A public meeting is being planned for Tuesday, September 4, in Hayfork at the VFW Post on Highway 3.
