The GW Fire was initially reported at 7:30 am, on August 31, 2007, in the Mt .Washington Wilderness area. Firefighting resources aggressively attacked the fire within the wilderness area using handcrews, helicopters, and air tankers. Strong, gusty westerly winds blew the fire out of the Wilderness east toward Black Butte Ranch. The Black Butte Ranch was evacuated on September 3 due to active fire behavior. Resident were allowed back September 4 when fire activity diminished. The Ranch remains at a Level 1 Evacuation Notice. This means residents and visitors should be kept advised as conditions may change. The fire is burning on USDA Forest lands and on State protected private lands.
