Summary

Fire activity remains minimal due to several days of cool temperatures, high relative humidities and rain. Containment for the Ham Lake Fire on the U.S. side has been at 100% since Saturday, May 19, and Canada's estimate of 60% containment for the Canadian portion holds.

At 8:00 amTuesday, the mandatory evacuation was lifted for the Gunflint Trail beyond the Cross River bridge.

Coordination continues between the American suppression operation and the Canadian IMT from British Columbia. Three American hotshot crews assisting on the Canadian side will return today, Wednesday. A South Dakota crew continues debris clean-up at Trail's End Campground today. Other resources continue to be demobed from the American side and most, if not all will be out by Thursday night. This is the last update to be posted by the Minnesota Incident Management Team.

Fuels Involved

Boreal forest mixture of hardwoods and conifers. Fire burning in blow down area that was caused by a heavy wind storm in 1999; there is blow down timber in the area.

Fire Behavior

Minimal fire activity was observed due to low temperatures, high RH and recent rain and snow.

Significant Events

Transition from Boyles IMT1 to Mannelin IMT2 occurred at 1800 hours on 5/19/07. The

Gunflint Lake closure has been lifted. Property owners were allowed to return as of 0800 on 5/20/07.

Close coordination continues between the American suppression operation and the Canadian IMT headed by Dave Manol.

Remarks

Acres listed in block #15 include U.S. acres only. The entire fire is approximately 75,443

acres and breaks down as follows: U.S.36,443 ac.; Canada 39,408 ac (including water

within the fire perimeter). The Percent Contained shown in block #16 is for the U.S. side of the fire only. The approximate percent contained for the entire fire is 70%. Projected containment date shown in block #17 is for that portion of the fire within the United States. As of May 17 (last report filed by the Canadian IMT1), there were 22 crews, 49 overhead, 8 light helicopters, 4 medium helicopters, 2 heavy helicopters, 2 dozers and a total of 292

people assigned to the Canadian portion of the fire. Three U.S. hotshot crews continue to assist the Canadians in Divisions V and U.

On authority of the Cook County Sheriff, the evacuation order was lifted at 8:00 am on Tuesday, 05/22/07.
