Aug. 17 0900 Update
Summary: The Freeze Out fire is now 15 acres, with new growth over the last two days attributed to spot fire activity outside the main fire perimeter. Firefighters have been successful in extinguishing those spot fires and maintaining a perimeter around the main fire through handline construction, bucket drops from helicopters and by using water from a hose lay they have established around the entire perimeter. Single and group tree torching coming from an island of unburned subalpine fire within the fire perimeter has led to dozens of spot fires over the last two days but firefighters have been successful in locating and extinguishing those spot fires. Gusty winds, high temperatures and low humidity challenged firefighters yesterday but fire managers reported good results in working toward full containment of the fire. The fire is burning in a remote area and no structures are threatened by the fire.
Planned Actions: Firefighters will continue to reinforce existing handline today. A hose lay is now established around the perimeter of the fire, providing a good water supply to aid firefighters in full containment of the fire. Firefighters will also continue to monitor for spot fire activity. Aircraft will be used as needed to manage spot fire activity.
