The Waterfalls 2 Fire was started by lightning the evening of August 4, 2012. It is located approximately 5 miles northeast of Mt. Jefferson, and 22 miles west of Warm Springs. The fire location is in high elevation timber where terrain and access have made firefighting efforts difficult. Warm temperatures, low humidities, and west-southwest afternoon winds have contributed to extreme fire behavior, especially on south slopes in east-west oriented drainages. The fire now has a 25 mile 300 foot mopup perimeter line around it. A type 3 management team headed by the Warm Springs Tribes will manage the Waterfalls 2 Fire effective September 3, 2012 at 6:00 am.
