INCIDENT UPDATED 9/28/2011

Approximate Location

33.877 latitude, -116.593 longitude

Incident Overview

The Windy Point fire started early Saturday evening west of the Palm Springs Tramway under high temperatures, low humidity and strong winds. The fire quickly grew to over 500 acres until firefighters gained the upper hand, often working in steep, rocky terrain.

During the course of the firefight, popular State Highway 111 was closed in both directions until firefighters could assure the flames, smoke and fire crews alongside the highway were no longer a threat to the motoring public.

The fire was declared 100% contained at 6:00 p.m. on Monday September 23, 2011. Fire officials expect full control later this week as firefighters continue to patrol and extinguish hot spots within the fire perimeter.

At no time were structures, damaged, destroyed or threatened.
