Incident Overview

Fire crews burned in the Bonita Vista area north of Lake Hemet and southeast of Idyllwild today as part of an on-going community fire protection plan.

This prescribed fire project is planned for 600 acres this year.

Today fire crews burned 20 acres and have completed operations, and light smoke will be visible over night. Fire patrols will remain on scene overnight and mop-up operations will resume in the morning.

If favorable weather conditions return, burning operations will resume.

Fuels Involved

The vegetation within the project is predominantly south/southwest Slope chaparral (made up of chamise, red shank, manzanita, ceanothus and scrub oak) which make up the majority of project site. There are patches of grass, litter layers of twigs and areas covered with conifers.

Remarks

Reduce the potential threat from large and intense wildfire to the Communities of Bonita Vista, Mountain Center and Garner Valley by reducing the fuel loading. Provide for the resource and community protection by maintaining a variety of fuel age classes. Reduce the threat of wildfires to the flora and fauna that inhabit the watershed by maintaining a mosaic of different age species across the landscape. Provide forage and improved wildlife habitat by removing excess brush vegetation and encouraging new plant growth. Reduce the fuel loading within the project area by 30 to 70 percent to reduce the potential of a high intensity wildfire. Prescribed fire objectives: 30 To 70 percent of the project area treated. Reduce 1 to 10 hr. fuels by 30 to 80% No more than 30% reduction in ground cover at any one time within a 200 foot buffer along perennial stream riparian areas and natural bodies of water.
