Incident Overview
Update: August 27, 2009
Detected 7/25/2009, and located in the Gila Wilderness, about 8 miles east of Glenwood, New Mexico. This fire is estimated at 278 acres with interior smokes visible. This fire has been burning in very rough, rugged terrain, adjacent to fires that burned in recent history ( 2003 and later). As the Whitewater fire continues to burn, its growth will be limited, as it approaches old burns where the fuel loads have been modified. Recent rain showers have modified fire behavior on this low-intensity that has been burning mostly on the ground, conusming grass and litter, as it cleans the forest floor. Fire managers are visually monitoring the fire daily.
