A total of 26 lightning fires were ignited on the Inyo National Forest on Saturday, July 18, 2009. The Forks Fire, which is approximately 3268 acres, started at 2:54 p.m. near Intake II, a small lake alongside State Route 168, 12 miles west of Bishop. The fire quickly grew in size and forced mandatory evacuation of the Bishop Creek Canyon Recreation area and closure of Highway 168.

The Forks Fire is now 100% contained. The Inyo National Forest will resume command of the Forks Fire on Friday, July 24, 2009.
