Alps Complex Wildland Fire

INCIDENT UPDATED 7/9/2008

Approximate Location

40.919 latitude, -123.238 longitude

Summary

At 0600 Thursday morning, July 11, 2008, the management of the fires within the Alps Complex will transfer to the Iron Complex. Information will still be available on these fires, but it will be provided by the Iron Complex.

There was very little active fire on the Granite fire Tuesday. The southern portions of the fire along both Canyon Creek and Bear Creek look good and the lines are holding. Containment on the Granite has increased to 80% percent. On the Carey Fire, firefighters were able to clear a new access route for crews and pack strings using the New River Trail. The New River Trail will provide a shorter and less strenuous route for both crews and pack strings. The smokejumpers that were working on the north side of the Carey fire hiked out Tuesday and a new crew will be going in on Wednesday, July 9th.

Both the Granite and the Carey fires are within the Trinity Alps wilderness. The crews working on the Granite and Carey fires continue to use Minimum Impact Suppression Techniques (MIST). Wednesday, Crews on the Granite Fire will continue to secure the perimeters along Bear Creek and Canyon Creek Trail and monitor and control hot spots on the northern edge. On the Carey fire, the additional crew that will be hiking in will clear trail as they go and firefighters already on the fire will continue to extinguish hot spots along the fire edge and work to further contain the fire's progress.

The Alps Complex, located in the Trinity Alps Wilderness on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, consists of 11 fires that were all started by lightning over the June 21st weekend. There are no immediate threats to structures or communities. The Granite and Carey fires currently are the only active fires within the Alps Complex. The objective in the wilderness area is to use fire fighting techniques that are "light on the land". Wherever possible crews are clearing and using existing trails and natural features such as rock slides, sparse fuels and streams as fire containment lines.
