The Cub Complex, which includes the Onion and Cub Fires, is located 16 miles southwest of Chester, California. Both fires were caused by lightning on June 21, 2008.

On Tuesday, July 22, Northern California Interagency Incident Management (NorCal) Team II will transfer the management of the complex to a smaller team organization.

Approximately 400 firefighters and support personnel are currently assigned to the complex. Demobilization of resources no longer needed continues.

Fire control lines have been established around both the Onion and Cub fires. Fire suppression rehabilitation will be ongoing for both the Onion and Cub fires.

All remaining evacuation orders in the areas of Jonesville, Butte Meadows, and Scout Camp have been lifted.

Highway 32 is open. The public should use caution when traveling through the fire area. Call Caltrans at 800-427-ROAD/7623 for the latest road information.

The Lassen National Forest (NF) temporary Forest Closure Order remains in effect which includes a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail within the southern portion of the forest. The Potato Patch, Alder, and Elam campgrounds located south of Highway 36 in Deer Creek Canyon remain closed. All forest campgrounds and the Pacific Crest Trail north of Highway 36 remain open for forest visitors, campers, and hikers.

Fire Behavior

Firefighters have observed smoldering and creeping fire within interior un-burned areas. The Cub Complex includes both the Onion and Cub fires that are located in steep terrain. Control lines have been established around both the Onion and Cub fires. Firefighters expect no movement for either fire.

Significant Events

Demobilization of resources that are no longer needed continues. Fire suppression rehabilitation will be ongoing for both the Onion and Cub fires. All evacuation orders in the areas of Jonesville, Butte Meadows, and Lassen Scout Camp have been lifted and all businesses are open. State Highway 32 is open with no restrictions. The public is encouraged to use caution when traveling through the fire area, as firefighters, utility crews, and large equipment operators may be working on or near the highway or side roads. Firefighters continue to mop-up and patrol on all divisions of the Cub Complex. Fire suppression rehabilitation is planned for portions of the Pacific Crest Trail on the eastern side of the Cub fire and the containment line along the southern fire perimeter.

Cub Complex is made up of the Onion Fire (4,782 acres and 100% contained) and the Cub Fire (14,936 acres and 100% contained) for a total of 19,718 acres and 100% containment. On Tuesday, July 22, Northern California Interagency Incident Management (NorCal) Team II will transfer the management of the Cub Complex to a smaller team organization. Transition planning for the Cub Complex is occurring. The Lassen National Forest (NF) temporary Forest Closure Order remains in effect which includes a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail within the southern portion of the forest. The Potato Patch, Alder, and Elam campgrounds in Deer Creek Canyon remain closed. Forest campgrounds and the Pacific Crest Trail north of Highway 36 are open. In the Lassen NF, firewood cutting permits have been suspended, campfires are allowed only in designated campgrounds and recreation sites, and vehicles are restricted to roads and trails. Smoking is allowed only in enclosed vehicles or buildings.
