Summary

The Corral Fire was ignited by lightning on June 21, 2008. Dave Larsen's Northern Rockies Incident Management Team is assigned to the fire, which is under the jurisdiction of the California Departme of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE). Cooperating agencies include the USDA Forest Service (Lassen National Forest/Eagle Lake Ranger District), the Bureau of Land Management, Janesville Fire Department, Spaulding Fire Department, Big Valley Fire Department, and the California National Guard.

Basic Information

Incident Type Wildland Fire
Cause Lightning
Date of Origin Saturday June 21st, 2008 aprox 06:00 PM
Location 12 miles NW of Eagle Lake
Incident Commander Dave Larsen

Current Situation

Total Personnel 311
Size 12,500 acres
Percent Contained 85%
Estimated Containment Date Monday July 07th, 2008 aprox 12:00 AM
Fuels Involved

TImber (grass and understory). Primarily eastside pine and fir mix of small to medium-sized trees with open grass and low shrub understory.

Fire Behavior

The weather has been gradually warming over the Independence Day Holiday weekend, accompanied by lower humidities. Temperatures will continue to rise and a more unstable air mass is forecast for the early part of the week of July 7. These weather conditions are drying the down, dead fuels and grass, making the fuels more receptive to ignition. Erratic winds will likely cause "dust devils" over the recently burned areas, which could transport any, few remaining burning embers outside of the firelines. Mop-up efforts have greatly reduced the potential for new spot fires in all divisions of the Corral Fire.

Outlook

Planned Actions

Fire crews are scouring the Corral Fire on "search & extinguish" assignments for the few, smoldering bits of heat remaining within 200 feet of the containment lines. Aircraft, outfitted with infra-red, heat detecting equipment, are conducting aerial reconnaissance to assist firefighters. Fire crews are hauling hose, portable tanks, and other suppression-related gear to the base camp for transport to local and regional fire caches. A rehabilitation group is working on repairing dozer lines, constructing water barrs to prevent erosion, and other restoration efforts. Larsen's Northern Rockies National Incident Management Team (IMT) will be transitioning the Corral Fire back to the CAL FIRE Lassen-Modoc Unit, with the transfer of command scheduled for Tuesday, July 8 at @8:00 am.

Growth Potential

LOW. The potential for spotting over the containment lines has been significantly reduced due to the excellent work of the firefighters. There is still some slight potential for the slash windrows adjacent to the dozer lines to hold some heat until they are pulled back into the lines and fully mopped up.

Terrain Difficulty

Medium

Remarks

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has protection responsibility for the Corral Fire. Ownership includes Lassen National Forest (36%), Bureau of Land Management (8%), and private ownership (56%). Because of the high fire danger, CAL FIRE has suspended all burning permits in Lassen & Modoc counties. The Lassen National Forest has fire restrictions in place. Firewood cutting has been suspended, campfires are allowed only in designated campgrounds and recreation sites, and, vehicles are restricted to roads & trails. The Eagle Lake area, north of Susanville, is a popular destination for summer visitors. All recreational facilities on both BLM and USFS lands remain open & available for public use.
