Incident Overview

The Mud Swamp New River Wildfire started in the Mud Swamp/New River Wilderness Area located in the southwestern portion of the Apalachicola National Forest on May 10.  It is now burning in swampy flatland just west of the wilderness and is estimated to be 1,338 acres and 80%.  Firefighters have conducted burn out operations to remove remaining fuels from within containment lines and will be mopping up and patrolling the fire perimeter through the weekend.  About 90 firefighters remain assigned to the fire.  Today, May 16, quite a bit of rain has fallen on the fire.
