Summary
Fire began at approximately 1530 Saturday, February 9, 2008. Fire was caused by illegal ATV operation on the Jefferson National Forest near Villamont, VA.Fire spread up to the Blue Ridge Parkway through heavy fuel loads, steep terrain and sustained 40-50 mph winds that gusted between 60 and 70 mph contributed to extreme fire behavior. As a result an evacuation order was issued and 25 residences were evacuated. People were allowed to return to their homes at 6 p.m. Monday, February 11, 2008.Bedford County Fire and Rescue, the US Forest Service, National Park Service and VA Department of Forestry provided the initial response. On Tuesday, February 12, 2008 the Southern Area Incident Management "Blue" Team took over responsibility for the incident and are operating under a unified command with Bedford County Fire & Rescue.
