The burns will occur at The Point, Five Lakes, Hunting, Golf Course and South Boundary areas of the park. The prescribed fires will burn slash from thinned eastern red cedar cut during the summer and fall of 2010 and 2012. Native to Oklahoma, eastern red cedar is extremely invasive. The tree species creates a wildfire hazard, displaces other species from the natural ecosystem, impairs local air quality by producing allergens, and contributes to the general decline of the local water table. Under natural conditions eastern red cedar is limited by periodic natural fires. Weather permitting, fire managers plan to burn in the Five Lakes area on Saturday, February 16. The multi-use trail will be closed for public safety during the burn. Light winds from the west will move smoke to the east. Smoke, however, is a natural byproduct of fire and some amounts are unavoidable. Periodic prescribed burns prevent heavy fuel accumulation that would send a larger amount of smoke into the air should an uncontrolled wildfire occur. What are you doing to manage the smoke Public health and safety are always our priority; however there are always tradeoffs when dealing with smoke. Fire managers try to select days to burn when weather conditions will help move smoke up and away from our neighboring communities. Before each burn, land managers look carefully at what they plan to burn and the proximity of houses, roads, and other smoke sensitive sites to the planned burn area. The burn prescription is then written to mitigate negative impacts of smoke, especially to...

Chickasaw National Recreation Area to Initiate Prescribed Fires (Red Cedar Reduction Prescribed Burn 2012 Prescribed Fire)

Chickasaw NRA will begin a series of prescribed fires starting March 15, 2012 and lasting until April (depending on weather conditions). The fires will be conducted by a management team consisting of firefighters from Chickasaw NRA, Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge, Lake Meredith NRA, and other National Park Service units. Firefighter and public safety are the number one priority.During the burning process, Goddard Road will be temporarily closed to traffic. The road may be closed for extended periods due to smoke; drivers in the area will need to plan to use alternate routes. The prescribed fires will burn slash from 2100 acres of thinned eastern red cedar cut during the summer and fall of 2010. Native to Oklahoma, eastern red cedar is extremely invasive. The tree species creates a wildfire hazard, displaces other species from the natural ecosystem, impairs local air quality by producing allergens, and contributes to the general decline of the local water table.
