Forest Service crews have refocused efforts on clearing trees from roads along valley bottoms and below 600 feet in elevation. Chuck McDonnell, engineering technician for the Olympic National Forest, says the snow is blocking public access to areas above 1,000 feet and should be a deterrent to visitors. "There is no snow plowing in the forest, and people who head up into the snow should be prepared with chains, supplies and full gas tanks ... and remember that cell phones don't work most places and you may have to walk out," McDonnell said. McDonnell warns hikers that trail conditions are also poor in the national forest and that blowdown makes it easy to lose sight of the trails. The early December storm left hundreds of miles of roads and trails inaccessible and damaged major campgrounds, administrative sites, bridges and special use facilities throughout the national forest. After making emergency repairs and clearing debris from the first 11 miles of Forest Road 25 near Hoodsport, Wash., Hood Canal District crews found a massive landslide - several thousand cubic yards - that covered the road with as much as 15 feet of debris. The damaged and clogged culvert and debris over the road will take weeks, if not months to repair. As the crews fix what roads and bridges they can throughout the national forest, they are confronting more and more storm damage. Much of the emergency repair work they are doing now..."

"Hood Canal Ranger District, Olympic National Fores (Storm07 - Wa - Olf - 0002 Flood)"

"ROAD STATUS 12/13/2007 HOOD CANAL NORTH 2730000Open 2620000Open 2630000Closed Slide at MP 1.3 (No patrol past the slide)2610000Open Slide & Fillslope erosion at MP 0.72700000Open 2800000Open 2870000Open 2875000Open 2878000Open 2877000Open 2850000Open 2845000Open 2852000Open 2855000Open 2840000Open 12/13/2007 HOOD CANAL SOUTH 2200000Open 2300000Open 2270000Not Looked At 2372000Not Looked At 2500000Open/ClosedClosed at M.P. 9.2 & 11.1 (Several plugged culverts & debris in roadway. According to Charles McDonnell, Engineering Technician at the Quinault Office of the Olympic National Forest's Pacific Ranger District, his crews have made significant progress opening and repairing major roads in the Pacific Ranger District, particularly those that provide access to homes and businesses. But, McDonnell said it has been slow. So far, McDonnell and his crews have opened or partially opened nearly 20 roads by cutting through the blow-down and clearing away slide debris. Nearly 20 roads have been open or partially opened in the Hood Canal Ranger District, where road crews face having to..."

"Hood Canal Ranger District - North Road Status (Storm07 - Wa - Olf - 0002 Flood)"

"ROAD STATUS 12/13/2007 HOOD CANAL NORTH 2730000Open 2620000Open 2630000Closed Slide at MP 1.3 (No patrol past the slide)2610000Open Slide & Fillslope erosion at MP 0.72700000Open 2800000Open 2870000Open 2875000Open 2878000Open 2877000Open 2850000Open 2845000Open 2852000Open 2855000Open 2840000Open 12/13/2007 HOOD CANAL SOUTH 2200000Open 2300000Open 2270000Not Looked At 2372000Not Looked At 2500000Open/ClosedClosed at M.P. 9.2 (Several plugged culverts & debris in roadway. Forest officials strongly encourage visitors to check with local ranger districts for safe places for recreation or cutting Christmas trees. Heavy rain, flooding and wind during the intense storm have created hazardous conditions throughout the national forest, including leaning or downed trees, road washouts, destroyed campground facilities, blocked trails and unsafe bridges. The storm damage is being assessed and cleaned up by national forest employees and cooperators, but many of the hazards will remain for weeks until crews can repair or remove them. The Hood Canal Ranger District office in Quilcene, Wash., will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the sale of Christmas tree permits. The district will provide public safety information with each permit and advise tree cutters about safe locations to harvest Christmas trees. Christmas tree permits may also..."

"Storm07 Damages Olympic National Forest Roads, Tra (Storm07 - Wa - Olf - 0002 Flood)"

"Olympia, Wash., -- Storm07 may not have been the strongest Pacific Coast storm in recorded national forest history, but it was one of the longest and wettest, with sustained winds over 40 miles per hour and over 14 inches of rain at some locations. The storm hit late Sunday, December 2 and continued 41 hours, causing wind and flood damage to the forests and communities of the Olympic Peninsula. To make matters worse, the warmer "Pineapple Express" storm melted the existing three-foot snow cover at higher elevations throughout the Peninsula, adding even more flood water to over-filled lakes and streams. After a week of assessing damages to Forest Service roads, timber, recreation and special use facilities costs of recovery are estimated to exceed $8 million. The yet-undiscovered damage to remote portions of the Olympic National Forest likely include vast acreages of timber blow-down - primarily late-successional stands where the older, larger, and often diseased trees are very..."
