Tom Suwyn, departing Incident Commander, said; "With today's continued mop-up efforts and the resources we're leaving the District, they believe they'll be where they need to be, to continue effective management of these fires. The next big effort will be in rehab of the area and that'll be where their efforts focus." Road and area conditions that may impact public safety are the determining factors in decisions made by Valley County and the U.S. Forest Service to open or close access. The schedule for removing the Forest Service Area Closure Order and the re-opening of public roads by the Valley County Sheriff's Office is being finalized today and an announcement is expected this evening. Most of the effort of moping up the fire, picking up hose and driving engines is in steep country that will get slick with rain; also we worry about the possibility of hypothermia."As Suwyn indicated the main effort for the firefighters will be patrolling for hot spots near the communities of Yellow Pine and Johnson Creek and protecting against rolling rocks, burned logs, and other debris along the Johnson Creek and Warm Lake roads.Securing road access along Warm Lake and Johnson Creek roads is a priority so the Forest can safely allow public access to these popular recreational areas. The weather event area fire managers have been hoping for seems to be happening and is helping slow, stop, and extinguish fires that have plagued the state since the middle of July, and is also significantly reducing the potential of new fires. Recent rain, and snow (in elevations over 6500 feet), are changing the extreme burning conditions fire managers have been dealing with for the last three months. This is allowing managers of the 302,376 acre Cascade Complex to engage in more direct fire control measures and in some cases begin to close out this record making fire season. Two of the fires were ignited southeast of Lowman and have been kept to a few acres with initial attack. Some rain was received over the Forest, but it was not widespread. Now that the weather is in a warming and drying trend for a few days, it is possible that smoldering lightning starts could catch fire and turn into a large fire quickly. Visitors to the Forest this Labor Day weekend are being asked to do their part by observing the Stage 2 Fire Restrictions in effect.
