The Granite River, which runs between Saganaga and Magnetic Lakes, will remain closed on the U.S. side at this time. Iron and Larch Lake Public Boat Landings and the Iron Lake Campground and the Trails End Campground also remain closed. Reservations for the newly reopened entry points will be accepted through ReserveAmerica. Heavy smoke at the east end of Loon Lake and limited access is hampering structural protection efforts.   Today, fire suppression forces focused on structural protection for homes and businesses on Gunflint, Loon, and Poplar lakes, and along the Gunflint Trail. This number may change as the maps become more accurate.The Cook County Sheriff has established a homeowner hot line for landowners in the evacuated area. The number is 218-387-3093. The Sheriff plans to escort property owners to their properties today.This is still a dangerous fire and the public is not allowed from the Cross River Crossing to the end of the Trail. Gov. Tim Pawlenty will fly over the fire this morning and attend the informational public meeting at 11:00 AM at the Gunflint Fire Department Station #2. There are over 200 persons on the ground cooperatively fighting this fire from various locations such as New England, Indiana, Colorado, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota. It has burned into the area at the end of the Gunflint Trail where severe damage to multiple structures has occurred. The National Weather Service is forecasting severe fire conditions for the area this afternoon and tomorrow. South winds will switch to the west.The Cook County Sheriff has established a homeowner hot line for landowners in the evacuated area. This will be operational at 3:00 PM today. The number is 218-387-3093. Landowners that properly identify themselves will be given status on their property. As of 10:45 this morning a mandatory evacuation was ordered for the Gunflint Trail northwest of the Cross River crossing (about the last seven miles of the Trail).  An evacuation center is established at the Community Center in Grand Marais. The Type II Incident Management Team was briefed last night and are setup this morning at the Sea Gull Guard station near the west end of the Gunflint trail.  A resort and camp sites on Round Lake were evacuated yesterday as the fire spread quickly to the west with strong south easterly winds that gusted up to 30mph.  Air and ground resources were able to protect most structures however; one small out building was lost. During the evening, more resources were ordered and are now on scene and/or en route.  Today, Sunday, a red flag warning has been issued by the National Weather Service..."]]></description><pubDate>Sun, 06 May 2007 16:22:00 -06:00</pubDate></item></channel></rss>
