Perhaps when you hear them, you think of the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, or the National Park Service - agencies and logos you frequently see on the evening news. However, "interagency" includes local emergency response personnel as well. County law enforcement and rural fire departments form an important part of the partnership, and provide critical assistance and information. The Fairfield Volunteer Fire Department (VFD), working through and with the Teton County Fire Department is an example of how communities pull together to help each other. Members of the fire department did not camp for two weeks near Sun Canyon Lodge because they wanted media attention - or even pay. They were there because their neighbors needed them. The crew in the Pretty Prairie Cabin in the interior of the fire mopped up and secured the cabin and began clean-up and backhaul of hose..."

"Ahorn Fire Update - August 6, 2007 (Ahorn Wildland Fire)"

"Today's Activity: Firefighters will continue preparation work to protect property and evaluate and construct contingency lines. A crew will be airlifted by helicopter to the Pretty Prairie Cabin in the fire's interior to mop up hot spots and begin removing equipment. A strike team of seven engines is available to assist the Forest and local fire departments with initial attack. Currently, 5 crews, 3 helicopters, and 20 engines are assigned to the Ahorn Fire. Evacuations remain in place for the Gibson Reservoir area, Stoner area and Benchmark. Management and Status: Lower temperatures in the 60s, higher relative humidity in the 40 percent range, and light winds moderated fire activity yesterday. Activity was limited to smoldering with isolated torching of trees. However, an infrared flight Sunday evening indicated considerable heat inside the fire perimeter. Clear skies in the morning enabled fire managers to get a good look at the fire for the first time in four days. Crews..."

"Ahorn Fire Update - August 5, 2007 (Ahorn Wildland Fire)"

"Today's Activity: Jeff Whitney's Southwest Incident Management Team assumed management responsibility for the fire today. Management and Status: The Ahorn Fire and surrounding area remained under a Red Flag warning yesterday. Despite the potential for extreme fire activity, fire personnel observed moderate fire behavior. Smoldering, creeping ground fire was observed, along with backing fire and occasional torching of trees. Spot fires were reported in the Sheep Shed area on the southeast side of the fire in the afternoon. Helicopters performed bucket drops in the morning, putting water on hotspots to slow the spread of the fire into the K Bar L Ranch and Game and Fish Cabin on the west side of Gibson Reservoir. Crews continued improvement of the contingency line along Sawtooth Ridge on the Sun River Game Range and north towards the Deep Creek Ranch and structure protection in the Benchmark area, Stoner area, and Gibson Reservoir area. Evacuations remain in place for the..."

"Ahorn Update - 6:00 AM - August 4, 2007 (Ahorn Wildland Fire)"

"Management and Status: Afternoon winds that kicked up from the west after a frontal passage pushed the Ahorn Fire eastward toward Allan Mountain. By 6:00 p.m. on Friday, the front extended in an approximately six mile wide band from Renshaw Lake in the south to the shore of Gibson Lake, near the Dry Fork drainage, in the north. The fire also pushed along Goat Creek drainage on the northeast flank. Structure protection firefighters at the Fish and Game Cabin, at the northwest end of Gibson Reservoir, could see trees torching in the distance. On the south side of the fire, the Nineteen Creek drainage burned toward the south but did not reach Grizzly Basin. The perimeter of the fire remained stationary in the Benchmark area. To the north the fire moved minimally in the vicinity of the Prairie Reef Lookout. The tower man at Prairie Reef is at his post and continues to provide a lookout. The major firefighting activity was concentrated around the north and south ends of Sawtooth Ridge, six..."

"Ahorn Update - 10:00 PM - August 2, 2007 (Ahorn Wildland Fire)"

"Management and Status: Just like I forecast said Incident Meteorologist Joe Goudsward of the weather over the Ahorn Fire. Gentle southeast winds and reasonable humidity combined to limit fire perimeter spread to 780 acres. Firefighters in the Benchmark area dug direct fire-line (a line with no unburned fuel between it and the black created by the fire) east of the 202 trail. Structure protection groups on the northeast flanks set up sprinkler systems in the Mortimer Gulch area to green up the vicinity around buildings and make the area less flammable. Aerial operations targeted hot-spots and improved natural fire barriers by dropping 50,000 gallons of water and 8,000 gallons of fire retardant from helicopters and 28,000 gallons from fixed-wing aircraft. A plan on where to construct a contingency line along the Lewis and Clark National Forest Boundary is being developed with abutting private and public landowners and may be finalized on Friday. The firefighter evacuated from the..."
