Incident Commander Carl West turned the Calamity Complex over this morning to a Type 3 Team led by Dennis Klein. Klein&#39;s team of more than 75 firefighters will be working on the fires for the next several days and will be based out of Grant High School in John Day.Using precise aerial GPS mapping, the following acreages for the five fires in the Complex were determined: Poison Fire -- 1276 acresGrapple Fire - 993 acresFire 7176 - 4 acresFire 7162 - 2 acresFire 7169 - 1 acreA total of 2276 acres burned prior to containment of the fires. One fire was attacked by Malheur National Forest crews supported by personnel and equipment from the Calamity Complex. The second potential lightning holdover fire was not found despite searches from the air and the ground. Crews will look for it again today.Ash was falling on fire camp and the town of Seneca yesterday, but it wasn&#39;t from the nearby Calamity Complex - it was from the Egley Complex, 35 miles to the southwest of Seneca. The fire camp at Seneca is downsizing quickly as the Calamity Complex approaches containment. Crews and equipment are being reassigned to other fires in the region. Steady progress is being made toward containing the Grapple and Poison Fires. Fire officials expect to reach full containment by the end of shift on Monday, July 16.While working toward mopping up all hot spots within 300 feet of the firelines, firefighters are also prepared to quickly attack fires that may start in the area as a result of today&#39;s expected lightning. The fire team logistics staff is working hard to meet the unique needs of firefighters at the Incident Command Post in Seneca. With daytime temperatures running over 90 degrees, night crews are able to sleep well during the heat of the day thanks to two sleeper trailers on site. The sleeper trailers each provide 24 air-conditioned bunks in a dark setting and are the perfect solution to the sleep needs of day sleepers. A burst of wind during the night caused trees to burn inside the lines of the Grapple and Poison fires, but fire did not spread outside of the firelines. The potential remains for torching trees to spread embers beyond the lines.The Poison Fire is mopped up 100 feet in from the outer perimeter, and a successful burnout operation was conducted yesterday on the Grapple fire to further improve the fireline. Overall containment of the complex stands at 30%.There is a fire weather watch this afternoon through tomorrow evening for dry thunderstorms and abundant lightning. Winds will shift to southerly, which may cause changes in fire behavior and new challenges to the firelines.
