Although no changes to the access restrictions will be in place by the July 28 weekend, officials are planning for a significant reduction in the amount of closed area by August 4.The closure of Federal lands west of Highway 395, north of Highway 20, south of the Izee-Paulina Highway along the Malheur National Forest boundary, and west of the Silver Creek Road near Riley has been in place since July 9, just three days after the Egley wildfire complex started. Crews concentrated on the northern part of the Silver Fire, building line and burning it out east from the Delintment Lake area toward the Bear Canyon Fire. Although the Silver and the Bear Canyon Fires may eventually join, current strategy is to prevent further movement of the fires toward one another as well as to the north. A finger of the Bear Canyon Fire moved to the northeast, across the 47 road. Firefighters attacked it with dozers, engines, crews and helicopters and were able to hold it. The night shift will install extensive hose lays in this area to have water available tomorrow. The Egley Complex is now 55 percent contained. Late yesterday afternoon the southern end of one of the lightning-caused fires was pushed further south towards Highway 20 (east of Riley) and crossed the highway, closing the road. Approximately 10 acres of grass and brush burned before fire crews successfully lined the fire and stopped its southern progress. The fire continued to burn towards the east which prompted the Harney County Sheriffs department, in coordination with the fire management team, to evacuate rural residents west of Hines between the city limits and Sage Hen Hill. Residents bordering the city limits - at Highland Estates, the Dapple Gray subdivision and the Hines Mobile Park - were put on evacuation notice but not asked to leave their homes. Other incidents within the 18-20 fire Complex were either unstaffed or contained over the period. The main active incidents are fuel and wind driven, with consistent brush, juniper, and grass vegetation, and with wind gusts from 15-20 miles per hour for extended periods. The majority of growth on the Egley Complex was south and southeast today. Active burning was reported well into the evening with a strong possibility of at least two of the fires burning together overnight. Public access to the area has been closed at the following locations: At the junction of Hines Logging Road and U.S.Highway 20 West (no access to the41 or 47 roads from Hines), and at the junction of U.S. Highway 20 West and the Silver Creek Road near Riley, Oregon.
