Today: One crew will remove the sprinklers and hoses that were put out in case fire approached a historic cabin east of the fire. The other remaining crew will continue to mop up some patches of smoldering areas well within the fire's perimeter. The other crews that have been working on the fire are being released.Saturday's Fire Activity: The fire received light rain. The rain is not enough to wet the fire area thoroughly, but still leaves behind higher humidity and reduced smoldering. Crews completed connecting the last segments of line around the fire, and spent most of the day mopping up. At the end of the shift they finished cleaning up their remote camping sites before all but one crew left the fire. Fire restrictions are in place on the Shoshone National Forest. One crew continues the monitoring of constructed line, to ensure that there no escapes outside the line. They also mopped up within the perimeter. Helicopters supported crews by ferrying supplies and making bucket drops on hot spots. A structural protection specialist arrived on the fire today. He is working closely with the Park County Fire Warden to identify areas and strategies for protecting homes in the Green and Whit Creek drainages, should the need ever arise in connection with either this fire or a different fire. The pines and Douglas-fir in these drainages are being killed by bark beetles, which exacerbates the fire danger. Today's Planned Actions: Steady progress is being made toward containment. Crews will continue to work directly on the fire's north edges and continue to connect sections of fire line. Residents were updated on the Citadel Fire's current status, suppression plans and expected fire behavior. Crews took advantage of favorable weather and made significant progress on the fire's northeast flank by tying control lines together. Helicopters continued to support crews by ferrying supplies and making bucket drops on hot spots. Today for the first time two heavy helicopters were utilized to extinguish interior spot fires and tree flare ups. Crews continue to hold and monitor control lines on the southern side of the fire. Fifty percent of the trees are dead due to bark beetles. For the second straight day higher humidities and moderate winds aided firefighters as they constructed line on the north sides of the fire. A structure protection group completed defensible space around a historic lodge and outbuildings about a mile ahead of the fire.Helicopters and air tankers dropped water that cooled hot spots directly. The water drops also raised humidity nearby, moderating fire near crews working. Night infrared flights have been very useful for pinpointing heat within the perimeter so that daytime work can be more effective - and less expensive.
