This is the last update from the Central Oregon Incident Management Team. On Sunday, September 21, 2008, the Royce Butte Fire will be returned to the district under the direction of a Type 3 Team, led by Ron Rucker. Fire information will be available from the Crescent Ranger Station at 541. 433. 3200. Previous email address will be discontinued.  FIRE ACTIVITY SUMMARY: Cool temperatures will aide mop up today, as firefighters worked farther into the interior of the fire. Back hauling of hose lay and equipment is expected to be completed by Sunday. Rehabilitation of suppression areas and dozer lines continues. There were no initial attack incidents today. Current acreage remains at 381. Smoke from the Royce Butte Fire has been minimal with inversions lifting by mid morning. The fire is currently at 80% containment. The two teams will work together to coordinate resources with the COIMT working on wildland fire suppression and the OSFM will manage structural protection.  The Royce Butte Fire started at approximately 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 16th on the Deschutes National Forest near the Crescent Lake Junction on Highway 58. The fire has burned approximately 389 acres of private and national forest land. Structure protection remains a primary objective, as well as, firefighter and public safety. The fire is under investigation as human caused. The evacuation level for residents in this area still remains at Level II which means residents must be prepared to leave on a moment&#39;s notice. Highway 58 will also open at 2:00 p.m. Motorists are encouraged to watch for fire apparatus and travel with their lights on while traveling through the fire area due to smoke from the fire. Motorists should be aware of congestion. Highway speed will be reduced to 35 MPH through the fire area. With improved weather conditions, the Royce Butte Fire remains within the established perimeter. The fire is completely lined. Spot fires occurring outside the fire line remain a priority today.  Office of State Fire Marshal task force personnel continue to protect structures. Continued lower temperatures and higher humidity levels resulted in moderate fire activity within the fire perimeter. Mop up is an ongoing objective. Firefighters have initial attack responsibilities over areas adjacent to the fire, but no new starts occurred. Current acreage remains at 381, with 60% containment. At 2 pm yesterday the evacuation level was reduced from Level 3 to Level 2. Residents were allowed to return to their homes with notice to be on alert and ready to leave at a moments notice.
