Historically, fire has brushed Split Mountain every 20 to 200 years. With each sweep, the land has a fresh start by renewing plant communities and habitat for wildlife. With the first rains following the fire, native grasses will begin to emerge, attracting wildlife to the tender shoots as they prepare for winter. Wildlife will typically benefit from open grassland for several decades after a fire before the area transitions into a sage community. On Split Mountain, the main weed threat is Cheat Grass and firefighters are working to limit the spread of this invasive species through the use of minimum impact suppression techniques that reduce soil disturbance. Noxious weeds exist throughout the basin and about 200 acres were treated within Dinosaur National Monument in 2007.Dinosaur National..."

"Split Top 1 Fire Update (Split Top 1 Wildland Fire)"

"STATUS Estimated Acres Burned: 420Estimated Percent Contained: To Be Determined Expected Full Containment: To Be Determined Cause: Lightning Date Started: August 25, 2008 Structures Threatened: None RESOURCESEngines: 0 Helicopters: 1Dozers: 0 Water Tenders: 0 Total Resources Assigned: 26Current Situation: The fire is located approximately three miles north of the Utah temporary visitor's center on the Dinosaur National Monument. Firefights are managing Split Top 1 and 2 by keeping the fire confined to a specified area, which will create a mosaic of vegetation in the landscape and improve wildlife habitat. Currently, Split Top 1 is approximately a quarter acre and Split Top 2 is approximately a tenth of an acre. Two firefighters suppressed the Split Top 3 fire last night since it was burning in the Monument, but near the boundary with the Bureau of Land Management. Projections based on current fire weather indicate that the Split Top 1 and Split Top 2 fires could grow together and possibly reach an approximate size of 200 acres over the next several days. Split Top 3 is expected to be 100% controlled later today. All Split Top fires will continue to be monitored..."
