Yesterday, fire personnel completed mapping of heat sources both within and outside the wilderness. Crews will continued to search for and extinguish hot spots within 100-300 feet of the perimeter based on the information obtained from radiometric mapping. The fire remains at 10% containment. To secure the northern perimeter, several actions were taken yesterday. Firefighters conducted a burnout along the lower portion of the Pole Creek Road. The objective was to create a 300 foot buffer between Pole Creek Road and the fire. On the west flank, along Sawmill Ridge, firefighters are concentrating efforts to locate and extinguish numerous small spot fires. The fire is now 10% contained. The fire burned actively in three different areas on Wednesday, with the greatest activity being to the east of Cougar Point. Late Wednesday afternoon, winds shifted back to a southwesterly flow and the fire made an eastward push just south of the Forest boundary from Cougar Point towards Pole Creek Road. The fire reached the road but did not cross it. A heavy airtanker dropped retardant on the fire in an effort to slow its forward momentum and several engines worked the fire along the road. Around midnight on Monday the wind flow shifted to a northwest flow, slowing the fire&#39;s growth to the north. This wind pattern continued throughout the day on Tuesday. After the skies cleared Tuesday morning fire managers flew the fire to assess impacts from Monday&#39;s activity. The fire did not reach Pole Creek Guard Station and firefighters returned to the spike camp yesterday as it did not appear to be in imminent danger. The fire did burn through some grazing allotments; that damage is still being assessed. "By mid-afternoon we had to direct firefighters to disengage from suppression actions and move to safety zones as the fire outflanked them," said Incident Commander Paul Summerfelt. Yesterday, fire managers made the decision to change strategy on the East Slide Rock Ridge Fire. Initially the lightning-ignited fire was allowed to play its natural role in the Jarbidge Wilderness, but after the fire escaped the wilderness Thursday, fire managers reassessed the situation and chose to reclassify the fire as a wildfire. In doing so, a Type 1 Incident Management Team was ordered and will assume management of the fire by Monday August 25. This change reflects the decision to suppress the fire outside the wilderness in locations that threaten private property and other values at risk. Gusty winds that pushed the East Slide Rock Ridge Fire outside the Jarbidge Wilderness on Thursday moderated on Friday allowing firefighters to keep fire spread in check. Yesterday&#39;s retardant drops throughout the day helped with containment efforts on a portion of the East Slide Rock Ridge Fire east of the Jarbidge Wilderness in the head of Canyon Creek. Fire beyond the wilderness boundary is estimated at 600 acres. Fire activity in Canyon Creek and the South Fork of Canyon Creek will moderate today due to a decrease in winds from the west. Two 20-person crews and one 10-person crew arrived yesterday, along with engines and dozers, to aid in the work to contain the fire outside the wilderness eastern boundary and &quot;pull&quot; the fire back into the wilderness. Fire managers are also focusing on checking the East Slide Rock Ridge Fire&#39;s movement on the west side of the wilderness.
