The winds are pushing smoke into valleys near the fire, causing low visibility. The fire, however, has not been spotting or torching in response to the wind. A few (less than ten, campfire-size pockets of fuels have been smoking in the fire's interior and several hand crews are mopping them up today. A infrared flight Sunday showed only three small hot spots in the fire's interior. Most of the rehabilitation of roads, trails and fire lines that could be completed by firefighters and heavy equipment at the fire was completed today. Two strike teams of engines and a water tender are patrolling the fire and a hand crew is mopping up a small area of interior fires along the west flank (Division C). Last night the existing containment lines were maintained and improved. The dry fuels and steep terrain have made line construction and expansion challenging. The fire's movement has been mostly terrain-driven, travelling up-hills and up-valleys. Fire suppression strategists had planned today to connect a ridge top dozer line to an opened road with hand line through the steep, forested slope, but the fire moved between both lines to the east. Two hot shot crews were to build the connecting hand line, but instead continued to strengthen existing fire lines. The hot fire is consuming fuels cleanly as it burns and its movement is primarily terrain driven. Although the SW, S, and SE perimeters have been well secured, heavy timber, steep terrain and very dry fuels make containment challenging on the W near the Whitmore Lookout; on the N at a ridge between Kartar Road and the Dan Nason Road; and on the NE near Summit Lake Road. The recent relatively cool, moist weather conditions are forecast to become increasingly hot and dry starting today. Active fire behavior is expected and the containment lines are likely to be tested this afternoon and, increasingly, in the next few days.Last night's crews made good progress in extending and strengthening containment lines on the W and NE. The fire is estimated to be 15 percent contained. Fire lines surrounding the Whitmore Lookout, which was threatened by fire on Friday and Saturday, have been reinforced and the lookout is now being protected by engines. The fire has been burning aggressively through steep, rocky terrain since last Thursday, burning through grass, sage and ponderosa pine forests nine miles northwest of Nespelem, Washington.
